Artist Statement: Penny Apple

As an artist, my passion lies in capturing the expressive beauty of the world through bold, loose brushstrokes and a distinctive acrylic painting style I call expressive realism. My work blends thoughtful precision with an intentional freedom that breathes life, energy, and emotion into every subject. Whether it’s the soulful gaze of a beloved pet, the dance of light across a landscape, or the joyful chaos of colour and texture, my mission is always to spark connection, curiosity, and joy.

At the heart of my process is a simple truth — value does all the work, but colour gets all the credit. I believe that getting the lightness or darkness right is far more important than the colours themselves when it comes to creating powerful, impactful art. My paintings are built in layers, starting with a coloured ground — never a blank canvas — because every story deserves a strong foundation.

I don’t use black in my mixing, instead crafting rich subdued tones by desaturating brighter hues. This keeps my work vibrant, harmonious, and full of life. I love using techniques like optical blending, where layers interact visually to create subtle transitions and dynamic energy. It’s a little bit of magic that mirrors life itself — perfectly imperfect, full of surprises, and more beautiful the closer you look.

My subjects often include pets and animals, whose personalities and expressions endlessly inspire me. Each piece becomes more than just a portrait — it’s a joyful tribute to the memories, love, and stories we share with them. I also draw inspiration from the landscapes and little everyday moments around my home in Deniliquin, NSW, celebrating the charm and character of rural life.

While I’m not offering tutorials just yet, it’s something I hope to share in the future. In the meantime, if you’re an aspiring artist with questions about expressive acrylic painting, I’m always happy to chat and help where I can. Never be afraid to reach out — I believe creativity should be a joyful, shared experience.

For me, art isn’t about chasing perfection — it’s about embracing the beauty of expression, the thrill of the brush, and the quiet joy of connection. Every brushstroke is an invitation to wander, wonder, and dream.

Keep splashing colours!
